A man was arrested after a "group of men" unleashed suspect pepper spray during an incident in a parking garage at London's Heathrow Airport on Sunday (December 7), Cmdr. Peter Stevens of London's Met Police confirmed in a statement.
The incident isn't being investigated as an act of terrorism, according to Stevens. Police responded to a report of "multiple people being assaulted" at the parking garage at Heathrow's Terminal 3 at 8:00 a.m. local time.
"A number of people were sprayed with what is believed to be a form of pepper spray by a group of men who then left the scene," the department said in its statement.
The suspect detained wasn't immediately identified, but is still reported to be in custody on suspicion of assault, according to police.
"At this stage, we believe the incident involved a group of people known to each other, with an argument escalating and resulting in a number of people being injured," Stevens said.
Several people were transported to local hospitals via ambulances for what are suspected to be non-life-threatening injuries, though officials didn't immediately confirm the total number of victims injured. Terminal 3 remained open, though there was "some disruption of traffic" reported near the parking garage following the incident.
Stevens confirmed that the department planned to increase its presence throughout the airport for the rest of Sunday.
"Our teams are currently responding to an incident involving the emergency services in the Terminal 3 multi-storey car park. Passengers are advised to allow extra time when travelling to the airport and to check with their airline for any queries," Heathrow Airport said in a statement shared on its X account.
